Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Canon imageRUNNER 5050 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a central reprographics or large workgroup printing 30,000-100,000 pages a month.
  • You want 50 ppm letter B&W with true 1200 x 1200 dpi (a step up from the 5020).
  • You're replacing a like-for-like 5050 and want supply continuity (GPR-21 / C-EXV13 family).
  • You need 3,650-sheet standard capacity for long unattended runs.
  • You bought it for the 10.4-inch touchscreen and standard MEAP for custom workflow apps.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 20,000-30,000 pages a month — within duty cycle, just amortize over more time.
  • You need scan-to-network — works for SMB/FTP/email; cloud workflows need MEAP apps.
  • You need finishing — staple-stacker, hole-punch, and booklet finishers all available as add-ons.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 15,000 pages a month — get an iR 3245 instead.
  • You need color. Mono only.
  • You need modern security or native AirPrint — not on this platform.
  • You don't have 208V power and adequate floor space — this is not a desktop machine.
  • You need a current security baseline — the 5050 is end-of-life from Canon for security updates.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Canon imageRUNNER 5050 is the true 1200 x 1200 dpi successor to the 5020 in Canon's mid-volume production B&W line — same 50 ppm engine, same 200,000 pages/month duty cycle, same 3,650-sheet standard capacity, but with the higher-resolution print engine and standard Gigabit Ethernet. First copy out is 3.5 seconds. The 10.4-inch color touchscreen, standard auto duplex, MEAP application platform, and 100-sheet DADF are all in the box. Toner is the GPR-21 / C-EXV13 family. The chassis is 47 x 25-3/8 x 29-1/4 inches and weighs around 470 lb. This is the right machine for a central reprographics department, in-plant, or large workgroup printing 30,000-100,000 pages a month that needs 50 ppm B&W throughput with serious capacity headroom. The thing buyers regret: thinking the 5050 has modern security. The platform is from the late 2000s — no TLS 1.2, no SMBv3, no native AirPrint or scan-to-cloud. Most buyers today are existing fleet operators replacing a sister unit. If you need modern workflows, look at the iR-ADV DX 6700 series instead.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

Canon imageRUNNER 5050 , common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (888) 574-5120 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the Canon imageRUNNER 5050 ships with a starter toner cartridge. The starter toner typically yields around 48,000 pages at 6% coverage. The replacement toner model is the Canon GPR-24 (1872B003AA), which also yields approximately 48,000 pages. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The Canon imageRUNNER 5050 is a mid-volume production printer with a 50 ppm engine, a 200,000 pages/month duty cycle, and a 3,650-sheet standard capacity, designed for high-volume environments. In contrast, the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE DX 4825i is a workgroup multifunction printer with a 25 ppm engine, a 1,200-sheet standard capacity, and modern features like Wi-Fi, a 256 GB SSD, and a 10.1" color touchscreen. The 5050 lacks modern security features like TLS 1.2 and SMBv3, while the 4825i includes these and more advanced scan capabilities. For small offices, the 4825i is a more modern and versatile choice.
The Canon imageRUNNER 5050 is designed for high-volume environments, with a 50 ppm engine and a 200,000 pages/month duty cycle, making it suitable for large workgroups or central reprographics departments. For a small business with lower print volumes, this printer may be overkill. Consider stepping up to a more commercial option that fits your needs better.
No, the Canon imageRUNNER 5050 is a monochrome printer and only prints in black and white. For color printing, consider alternatives like the Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5560i, Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3525i, or Canon imageRUNNER ADVANCE C3530i.
