Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Ricoh SP-1120N is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You're a small office or one-person shop scanning 30-200 pages a day — invoices, contracts, intake forms — and 20 ppm / 40 ipm is plenty.
  • You want network scanning at the lowest price point — gigabit Ethernet plus PaperStream IPNet so any PC on the LAN can drive it.
  • You scan in mono only and don't need color — the SP-1120N is the cheapest 2nd-gen SP model for a reason.
  • You need duplex but at modest speed — 40 ipm covers most small-office batches.
  • You need plastic ID card scanning at the front desk plus occasional long pages.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You scan 200-400 pages a day — handles it but you're at the edge of the 4,500-sheets/day rating.
  • You scan in color occasionally — works, you'll just notice the speed difference vs the 1130N (30 ppm) you didn't buy.
  • You only have USB at the desk — works fine on USB 3.2, the LAN port stays unused.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You scan more than 50 pages at a time without restocking — the 50-sheet ADF is the bottleneck across all SP models.
  • You want faster throughput — pay the small upgrade for the SP-1125N (25 ppm) or SP-1130N (30 ppm). Same chassis, faster motor.
  • You need a flatbed for books or fragile originals — get the SP-1425.
  • You need a touchscreen on the device — no LCD on this model.
  • You scan A3 / 11x17 — letter is the max.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Ricoh SP-1120N is the entry model in the 2nd-generation SP-series compact scanners — a sheet-fed duplex unit that runs at 20 ppm / 40 ipm color (200/300 dpi) with a 50-sheet ADF and an expected daily volume of 4,500 sheets. It's the cheapest network-capable scanner in Ricoh's lineup and aimed at single-user offices, branch reception desks, and one-person AP workflows that scan 30-200 pages a day. The chassis, ADF, and software are identical to the SP-1125N (25 ppm) and SP-1130N (30 ppm) — only the motor speed differs, so consumables (pad unit, pick roller, brake roller) interchange across the family. Connectivity is USB 3.2 Gen 1 plus 10/100/1000 Ethernet, and bundled PaperStream IPNet means any PC on the LAN can drive it without a USB cable. PaperStream IP (TWAIN/ISIS), PaperStream Capture, and ABBYY FineReader Sprint ship in the box. It scans 50-209 gsm paper, plastic ID cards up to 0.76 mm (1.24 mm embossed, landscape only), and long pages up to 120 inches at 200 dpi. The thing buyers regret: saving $80 on the 1120N when they were always going to want the 1130N's 30 ppm speed. If you scan more than 100 pages a day, get the 1130N.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 3 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Ricoh machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using this for our small law office for about two years now. The network printing works reliably and the toner cartridges last way longer than I expected. Only complaint is the control panel takes some getting used to, but that's minor."
  • "Solid workhorse printer for home office use. Fast enough for my needs and doesn't jam like my old Canon did. Wish it had a second input tray, but for the price point it's hard to beat."
  • "Our IT department deployed about 20 of these across departments. They're compact, print speed is consistent, and we've had almost zero downtime. Driver support is good too."

FAQ

Ricoh SP-1120N, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (888) 574-5120 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The Ricoh SP-1120N is a document scanner, not a printer, so it does not use toner. Instead, it uses a replaceable roller set (Pick and Brake Roller Set) with a lifetime of roughly 100,000 scans. If you are looking for a printer that uses toner, consider models like the Ricoh SP 112, which supports individual workflows and uses toner cartridges.
The Ricoh SP-1120N is an entry-level sheet-fed duplex scanner designed for single-user offices, with a speed of 20 ppm / 40 ipm and a daily volume of 4,500 sheets. In contrast, the Ricoh fi-8170 is a high-volume desktop scanner aimed at departments or service bureaus, offering 70 ppm / 140 ipm and a daily volume of 10,000 sheets. The fi-8170 also features superior document handling, including support for business cards, plastic cards, and long pages up to 218 inches, while the SP-1120N is more suited for basic scanning needs. For small offices with lower scanning demands, the SP-1120N provides excellent value.
The Ricoh SP-1120N is well-suited for small businesses with light scanning needs, offering a speed of 20 ppm / 40 ipm and a daily volume of 4,500 sheets. It is ideal for single-user offices or branch reception desks that scan 30-200 pages a day. However, if your business requires higher scanning volumes or more advanced features, consider stepping up to a commercial option like the Ricoh fi-8170.
The Ricoh SP-1120N is a document scanner, not a printer, so it does not support printing in color or monochrome. If you are looking for a color printer, consider alternatives like the Ricoh SP C260DNw, Ricoh SP C261DNw, or Ricoh SP C360DNw.
