Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Toshiba e-STUDIO 389CS is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a small or medium workgroup of 5-20 people that needs A4/legal color at 40 ppm and doesn't need 11x17 tabloid output.
  • You print 1,500-6,000 pages a month — well within the 120,000-page duty cycle.
  • You want a small-footprint desktop or low-stand color MFP (19.9 x 21 x 25.5 inches, about 99 lb) — not a floor-standing A3.
  • You need accurate brand color matching with PANTONE calibration and embedded color sample pages built in.
  • You want a quad-core controller, 7-inch tablet-style touchscreen, and standard 256-bit AES encryption with hard disk wipe.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print up to 8,000 pages a month — within the 120K duty cycle.
  • You're upgrading from an older Lexmark CX-series — the 389CS chassis shares Lexmark heritage; drivers and EWS will feel familiar.
  • You need wireless — the MarkNet 8360 wireless option (GN1180) adds Wi-Fi.
  • You need a hard drive — the 320 GB HDD is optional on the 389CS (standard on the 479CS sibling). Order GE1250.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need 11x17 (tabloid) output — this is letter/legal only. Get the 3525AC or 3515AC for A3.
  • You print over 10,000 pages a month consistently — step up to the 479CS (50 ppm, 150K duty) or an A3 platform.
  • You need single-pass dual-scan duplex (DSDF) — this is a reversing RADF, not a single-pass DSDF.
  • You want the e-BRIDGE Next interface and Toshiba-native cloud connectors — the 389CS runs the Lexmark-heritage embedded web server, not Toshiba e-BRIDGE Next.
  • You need very fast warm-up — warm-up is approximately 90 seconds, longer than newer Toshiba models.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Toshiba e-STUDIO 389CS is a desk- or low-stand A4 color laser MFP for small-to-medium workgroups (5-20 users) that need 40-ppm color and mono on letter/legal — without the size, cost, or floor space of an A3 unit. It uses a quad-core 1.2 GHz print controller, prints at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, hits a 6-second first page out in mono and 6.5 in color, and is rated for a 120,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle (Toshiba publishes a 480K maximum tested ceiling, but the realistic monthly is 120K for the 389CS). Standard paper capacity is 650 sheets across one 550-sheet drawer plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray that handles 3.0x5.0 to legal plus envelopes; max is 2,300 sheets with optional 550-sheet trays. The 7-inch tilting tablet-style touchscreen runs the Lexmark-heritage embedded web server with PC-free printing from USB, network shares, MS Office files, PDFs, and image files. Standard scan destinations are USB, email, FTP, network/USB-connected computer, and Windows network folder. Auto-duplex print is standard; the 100-sheet RADF is standard for scanning. Memory is 2 GB (4 GB max) and a 320 GB HDD is optional. The thing buyers regret: expecting Toshiba's e-BRIDGE Next interface — the 389CS uses the Lexmark-heritage UI instead. If you want native e-BRIDGE Next, look at the 330AC or 400AC.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
