Is this the right printer for you?

Who the ZXP Series 7 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You print corporate, university, or government credentials at scale.
  • You print over 200 cards per month sustained.
  • You need dual-sided printing with smart-card encoding.
  • You staff a credentialing office with trained operators.
  • You require 300 dpi 24-bit color photo quality.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • It's fine if your encoding mix changes (mag, contact, contactless).
  • It's fine if your card design uses bleed-edge graphics.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • Skip this if you print under 200 cards a month — buy ZC300.
  • Skip this if you need card lamination — get the ZXP 7 with Laminator.
  • Skip this if Card Studio training time is unavailable.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

High-volume professional ID printer for corporate badging, university campus cards, and government credentialing programs. Prints 1,375 monochrome cards per hour and 300 color cards per hour, dual-sided with optional encoding (mag stripe, contact smart card, contactless). 300 dpi at 24-bit color renders photo IDs that don't look like printer output. Honest regret: at $4,000+ and a steep learning curve on the Zebra Card Studio software, this is wrong for any operation printing under 200 cards a month.

Universities, hospital systems, and Fortune 500 security teams running continuous badging programs standardize on the ZXP 7.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

What customers actually say

The 5-star consensus: "it just works"

Small sample size, high signal. The 1 verified reviewers picked this model to replace older inkjets or aging Zebra machines. Common threads in the feedback:

  • "Been using the ZXP Series 7 for our small ID badge operation for about two years now. Print quality is sharp and consistent, and the dual-sided printing saves us time. Only downside is the ribbon costs add up, but it's worth it for a business our size."

FAQ

ZXP Series 7 , common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (888) 574-5120 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

The ZXP Series 7 ships with a starter ribbon cartridge. The starter yield varies by type: monochrome ribbons yield up to 5,000 images, while color ribbons (YMCKO) yield 750 images per roll. Replacement ribbons include high-yield options like the True Colours ix Series (750 images for color) and monochrome black ribbons (5,000 images). When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The ZXP Series 7 is a high-volume ID card printer designed for corporate badging and credentialing, printing up to 1,375 monochrome or 300 color cards per hour with dual-sided encoding options. In contrast, the ZD621 is a 4-inch thermal label printer built for shipping, inventory, and barcode labels, with no card-printing capability. The ZXP 7 uses ribbon-based printing for durable IDs, while the ZD621 supports direct thermal or thermal transfer modes for labels. For small offices needing ID cards, the ZXP 7 is overkill unless printing over 200 cards monthly; the ZD621 is ideal for label-heavy workflows like warehouses or e-commerce.
The ZXP Series 7 is designed for high-volume environments like universities or large corporations, printing up to 1,375 monochrome cards per hour. With a steep learning curve and a price tag over $4,000, it’s excessive for small businesses printing under 200 cards monthly. Its advanced features (dual-sided encoding, laminating) are unnecessary for most small offices.
Yes, the ZXP Series 7 supports color printing at 300 cards per hour using YMCKO ribbons (750 images per roll). It also prints monochrome at higher speeds (1,375 cards/hour) with black ribbons. For businesses needing color ID cards, this printer is a robust choice, though its high volume and cost may not suit smaller operations.
