Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Savin IM 4000 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a department of 25-60 people that needs A3 (11x17) black-and-white output in-house.
  • You print 6,000-15,000 pages a month and want the headroom of a 37,000-page toner cartridge instead of changing toner every other week.
  • You scan stacks of two-sided originals daily and need single-pass duplex at 240 ipm to keep up.
  • You want one chassis that fits in the same footprint as the IM 3500 but pushes 40 ppm instead of 35 — same finishers, same panel, same Always Current Technology.
  • You need finishing — the 1,000-sheet hybrid, 3,000-sheet, or booklet finisher all bolt on, and the 3,625-sheet max output is meaningfully bigger than the IM 3500's 1,625.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 3,000-6,000 pages a month — the chassis is happy at that load, you'll just amortize over a longer lease.
  • You want Wi-Fi but didn't budget for it — the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n unit is an add-on, not standard.
  • You need fax — the Fax Option Type M45 bolts on; plan for the line install and the extra invoice line.
  • You're stepping up from a desktop MFP — the 168 lb floor-standing chassis is a real footprint change, but operators move fast on the same 10.1" panel.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You print under 2,000 pages a month — you're paying for 40 ppm A3 enterprise hardware and using maybe 5%. The IM 350F or IM 430F (A4) is the right call.
  • You need color. This is mono only — the IM C4500 (45 ppm color) is the same chassis family.
  • You print 15,000+ pages a month — step up to the IM 5000 (50 ppm) or IM 6000 (60 ppm); same chassis, same finishers, just faster engine.
  • You don't have floor space — 23.1 x 25.7 x 37.9 inches plus side and rear clearance is a real piece of furniture.
  • You print mostly Letter at moderate volume — the IM 430F (45 ppm A4) on a desktop will be cheaper and faster to install.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Savin IM 4000 is a floor-standing A3 black-and-white laser multifunction built for departments of 25-60 people that need real tabloid (11x17) output, heavy scanning, and meaningful finishing in-house. It prints and copies at up to 40 ppm, scans at 120 ipm simplex / 240 ipm duplex on a 220-sheet single-pass document feeder, and prints at up to 1,200 x 1,200 dpi. Standard paper capacity is 1,200 sheets across two 550-sheet drawers plus the bypass; the maximum is 4,700 sheets with the 2,000-sheet LCT or extra paper banks. Maximum output capacity (3,625 sheets with the right finisher) is more than double the IM 3500 — that's the main reason departments pick this over the slower model. The 10.1" Smart Operation Panel and Always Current Technology are identical to the rest of the Savin A3 line, so the admin and user training carries over. Standard connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus USB; Wi-Fi, NFC, and fax are all optional add-ons. The thing buyers regret: assuming the 5 ppm bump over the IM 3500 is the only difference. The real upgrade here is the 37,000-page toner (vs. 24,000) and the 3,625-sheet output ceiling — if you're not pushing 6,000+ pages a month, the IM 3500 is the better economics.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.

FAQ

Savin IM 4000, common questions

The questions we get asked most often on this model. If yours isn't here, call (888) 574-5120 and get an answer in about 30 seconds.

Yes, the Savin IM 4000 ships with a starter toner cartridge that yields approximately 37,000 pages at 6% coverage. The replacement toner model is Ricoh 841999 or 842126, which also provides a high yield of 37,000 pages. When you lease through us with toner included, you never pay for toner separately.
The Savin IM 4000 is a floor-standing A3 black-and-white laser multifunction printer designed for departments of 25-60 people, offering printing, copying, and scanning at up to 40 ppm. In contrast, the Savin 2404WD is a single-function wide-format monochrome plotter built for engineering and architecture offices, printing D-size and E-size drawings at 4 D-size prints per minute. The IM 4000 is ideal for general office use with its multifunction capabilities and high-volume output, while the 2404WD is specialized for large-format printing. For small offices needing multifunction capabilities, the IM 4000 is the better choice.
The Savin IM 4000 is designed for departments of 25-60 people and may be overkill for a small business due to its high monthly page volume capacity and floor-standing size. It offers a print speed of 40 ppm and a maximum paper capacity of 4,700 sheets, which is more than most small businesses require. If your business has lower print volumes, consider stepping up to a commercial option that better fits your needs.
No, the Savin IM 4000 is a monochrome-only printer. If you need color printing, consider alternatives such as the Savin MP C4504, Savin MP C5504, or Savin MP C6004.
