Is this the right printer for you?

Who the Sharp BP-50M36 is actually for

Most printer pages just tell you what a printer does. Here's the honest version: when this machine is the right choice, when it's fine, and when you should look at something else. We sell a lot of these for a reason, but the reason is not "every office."

Best fit

Pick this if...

  • You run a workgroup of 20-40 people that needs A3 (11x17) mono output and prints 4,000-9,000 pages a month.
  • You scan stacks of multi-page docs daily — the 100-sheet RSPF runs at 80 ipm mono/color and dual USB 3.0 ports make scan-to-thumb-drive fast.
  • You want a tilting 10.1-inch touchscreen with the same UI as the rest of the BP-50 line — one driver and training across mono and color.
  • You need native Universal Print and Microsoft Teams scan-to-folder without a third-party connector.
  • You're picking the volume-priced 36-ppm slot in the mono BP-50M series — platen first-copy drops to 4.6 sec, noticeably faster than the M26/M31.
Works fine

You'll be happy if...

  • You print 2,500-4,000 pages a month — the chassis is overspecced but per-page cost stays reasonable on a 5-year lease.
  • You want Wi-Fi — the BP-EB10 wireless LAN adapter is an inexpensive add-on, not standard.
  • You need stapling or hole-punch — the BP-FN11 inner finisher and MX-PN14B 3-hole punch bolt on cleanly.
  • You're moving up from a BP-50M31 — same chassis, same panel, same drivers; only the engine speed changes.
Look elsewhere

Skip this if...

  • You need color. This is mono only — look at the BP-50C36 for the same speed in color.
  • You print more than 10,000 pages a month — step up to the BP-50M45 or BP-50M55 to keep toner economics sane.
  • You want a small footprint — this is a 24 x 26 x 33-inch floor-standing unit weighing ~135 lb. before any finisher or stand.
  • You need PostScript 3, OCR, fax, or SSD out of the box — all are separate kits (MX-PK13L, MX-EB20L, BP-FX11, BP-SD10) that should be on the quote.
  • You expect Wi-Fi standard — wireless requires the BP-EB10 adapter on every BP-50 model.
Full specifications

Every spec, no guessing

The Sharp BP-50M36 is the mid-range 36-ppm monochrome A3 multifunction in Sharp's Essentials Series, sized for workgroups of 20-40 people printing 4,000-9,000 pages a month. It copies and prints 36 ppm on letter, scans up to 80 ipm mono/color through the standard 100-sheet reversing single-pass feeder, and ships with a 550-sheet drawer plus 100-sheet bypass for 650 sheets standard, expandable to 6,300 across optional drawers and the BP-LC10 3,000-sheet LCC. Print resolution is 1,200 x 1,200 dpi; platen first-copy drops to 4.6 sec — meaningfully faster off the glass than the M26 or M31. The 10.1-inch tilting color touchscreen is the same UI used across the entire BP-50M and BP-50C line — one driver, one user training, one toner family across speeds from 26 to 65 ppm and across mono and color. Connectivity is Gigabit Ethernet plus dual USB 3.0 standard; Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) via the optional BP-EB10 adapter. Native Universal Print, Microsoft Teams scan-to-folder, OneDrive, Box, and Dropbox are all in the base controller. The thing buyers regret: speccing the M36 for a 12,000-page office because it was cheaper than the M45 — toner economics get ugly above 10,000 pages a month.

Supplies & consumables

Toner, yields, and what to actually reorder

The #1 question we get on this printer is "which toner do I buy?" Short answer: you have two cartridge options and a drum. Standard yield TN830 covers roughly 1,200 pages. High yield TN830XL covers roughly 4,500 pages and is the better value for most offices. Pick XL unless you print very little.

The drum unit (DR810) is separate and usually lasts 15,000 to 30,000 pages before it needs replacing. At a typical small office volume, expect to change it once every 2 to 4 years.

If you lease this printer through us, toner and drum are included. You never pay for supplies separately. That's usually the better deal once you add up real costs over 3 years.
