TL;DR
- Accessible work surfaces must sit between 28 and 34 inches above the floor. That is a regulation, not a preference, and it rules out a lot of cheap fixed-height desks.

Get the full dimensional sheet before you compare anything
Every decision below depends on numbers most product pages do not print.
Catalogue listings give a headline size and stop. What you need is worksurface thickness, clearance under the top, and whether the quoted depth includes a rear cable channel. Dealers selling commercial office desks into corporate fit-outs generally publish the full specification sheet per line, because their buyers are specifying against a floor plan rather than a photograph. That is the format to insist on, whoever you buy from.
Without it you are comparing prices on products you have not actually measured.
Then start from the constraint that is not negotiable
Fixed dimensional requirements come next, because they invalidate options rather than merely ranking them.
The ADA Standards set accessible work surfaces at 28 inches minimum and 34 inches maximum above the finish floor, as section 902.3 sets out. Plenty of imported fixed-height desks arrive at 29.5 inches, which sits inside the range, but the moment you specify a fixed height you have committed every user at that station to it. Height-adjustable bases move through the range and remove the argument entirely, which is the main reason to pay for them.
Measure in linear inches per person, not desks
The count everyone tracks is desks. The count that determines whether the floor works is linear inches of work surface per person.

Moving a floor from 48-inch to 60-inch desks is a 25% increase in the resource people compete for, and it usually costs far less than 25% more per unit because the frame and the base are the same. The premium is in the top.
Where this bites is monitors. A 27-inch screen wants roughly 24 to 30 inches of viewing distance, and on a 24-inch-deep desk the screen ends up closer than that unless it is on an arm. Specify 30-inch depth where dual monitors are the norm, or budget for monitor arms and keep the depth. One of those is a furniture decision and the other is an accessories line, and they are frequently made by different people who never compare notes.

Standardise on two or three sizes and no more
The reconfiguration cost nobody models is variety.
A floor with two desk sizes can be rearranged by anyone with a floor plan. A floor with seven sizes, accumulated over four years of ad hoc purchasing, cannot be rearranged at all without a survey first. Every move becomes a bespoke exercise, and the labour cost of that exceeds the furniture saving that created it within about two cycles.
This is the same lifecycle-cost logic that applies to any distributed purchasing programme, and the discipline that works for global IT procurement applies unchanged to furniture: standardise the catalogue, allow regional exceptions deliberately rather than accidentally, and price the whole life rather than the invoice.
Two or three sizes covers almost every real office. A standard bench or straight desk, a larger variant for roles with genuine surface demands, and an L-shape or corner unit where a corner exists.
The clearances that get forgotten
Desk dimensions are only half the specification. The other half is the space around them.
- Circulation behind a seated user: 36 inches is workable, 42 is comfortable, and below 30 people stand up into each other.
- Knee space width: 30 inches clear is the practical minimum for a pedestal-free bay.
- Pedestal footprint: a mobile pedestal parked under the desk removes 15 to 18 inches of knee width. If you are specifying both, check they coexist.
Getting these wrong does not show up in a rendering. It shows up on day one, when two people cannot pass behind a row and the row has to move.
The questions that separate two desks at the same price
A 30-inch depth with a 4-inch cable trough is a 26-inch working depth, and that difference decides whether a monitor arm clamps to anything solid. Ask which of the two you are being quoted.
Ask what the top is made of and to what abrasion rating, ask the drawer slide cycle rating, and ask whether the parts are stocked in five years. A desk is not a difficult product. The difference between a good one and a bad one is almost entirely in components you cannot see from a photograph.
The order these decisions belong in
Dimensions first, because they are constrained by regulation and by the building. Standardisation second, because it determines what every later change costs. Specification third, because that is where the price sits and price is the easiest thing to compare once the other two are fixed.
Most offices run it backwards, starting from a budget per seat and discovering the dimensional constraints during installation. That sequence produces a floor that meets the budget and fails the floor plan, and the correction is always more expensive than the original saving.
